Viorel Spînu on Știrile ProTV: Exploring AI in Education

We need to build AI, not just use it.

In my interview, I talked about something that’s been on my mind for a long time: how we teach AI in universities. I think it’s crucial that we don’t just teach students how to use existing models—that’s the easy part. What really matters is understanding how these systems are built and how we can create them from scratch.

A concrete example? Automatically detecting deepfakes. It’s a real problem with serious implications, and the solution isn’t just plugging into some existing API—it’s about understanding the theory behind it. That’s what makes AI a serious field of study, not just a collection of tools we apply mechanically.

AI education should focus on solid foundations—data structures, algorithms, the theory behind machine learning. If we want to stay relevant, we have to go beyond just pressing buttons on a pre-trained model. We need to build, not just use.
